TUI Cruises, Germany / Mein Schiff
Mein Schiff is the first ship in the TUI Cruises fleet. The cruise line is a 50/50 joint venture between travel industry giants TUI and Royal Caribbean Cruises, and was formed primarily to serve the rapidly growing German cruise market. The ship, originally delivered as Celebrity Galaxy in 1997, was transfered from Celebrity Cruises to TUI Cruises for total refurbishment in March 2009.
Based on the ship's classically modern architecture, the art concept on Mein Schiff was developed by ICArt in close cooperation with the German architects in order to contribute to the ship's distinctively German character in comparison to Miami-based cruise ships.
The extensive art program is based on the architect's vision of the sea, and several of the public areas onboard bear such names as Atlantik, Himmel und Meer (Sky and Sea) and Blaue Welt Bar (Blue World Bar). The ocean's many expressions and the human experience of them are the general source of inspiration for both the architecture and the art decoration onboard.
Modern art by well-known German artists and photographers is liberally distributed throughout public areas, highlighted by names such as Manfred Bockelmann, Billy & Hells, Thorsten Klapsch, Julia Christe, Beatrice Hug, Christine Matthaï, Mark Volk, Alexander Wolf, Roland Stratmann, Sabrina Rothe, Rosalie and Ursula Kaufmann. The American glass and mosaic artist Paul Housberg has created the feature piece 'Tausend Farben blau' (A Thousand Shades of Blue) in the Grand Foyer which rises over four decks and 45 m2.
Artists from 12 other countries are also represented onboard.
