Royal Caribbean International, USA / Independence of the Seas

Independence of the Seas is the third Freedom class newbuilding. These ships are currently second in size only to RCCL's Oasis of the Seas

Art Collections on board are a tradition with Royal Caribbean throughout their fleet, and represent a long standing strategy to provide a beautiful, intriguing and enriching environment for their guests.  As Royal Caribbean’s art advisers, ICArt have developed the art concepts for all new ships' art collections since 1992.

For each new vessel, ICArt creates the unique artistic direction or “red thread” –  which creates a new and distinct character for each ship’s art collection. For Independence of the Seas, the inspiration is the Contemporary Spirit of the Old Masters. Throughout time, artists have always studied each other's work and been inspired by what they saw. The same image, the same light, the same colors show up time and again in new combinations, seen anew by eyes contemporary to the era, and resulting in art which tells us about this artist's relationship to his own world and cultures, as well as the dept he owes to the past.  Contemporary art recognizes the dept it owes to earlier artists, and many younger artists update images, messages, colors, to fit the languages of today, simultaneously using their iconic status to dissect accepted curltural norms and mores. Contemporary artists are using the old masters for their own purposes, not just copying them.  Archetypes in art history form the personality of the Independence of the Seas.
