Royal Caribbean International, USA / Jewel of the Seas
Jewel of the Seas is the fourth and last ship in the Radiance Class, described as modern super-yachts with wide-open spaces and 'acres' of glass.
For each new vessel, ICArt creates the unique artistic direction or “red thread” – which creates a new and distinct character for each ship’s art collection. Similar to her sister ships in that the tradition of contemporary and high-quality art is continued, the artwork on Jewel of the Seas is based on our view of our surroundings. We experience the art of landscape and light around us - whether representational or abstract, natural or man-made, traditional or contemporary. The Main Stairs feature Landscape artwork - not only one of the coldest forms of expression, but also one of the most beautiful. Landscape evokes history, memories, dreams - and grim reality. The Forward Stairs show Light as Art - a movement that has quickly moved to the forefront of the contemporary art world as a result of technology and communication. Light forms have become an art expression on their own, from neon to interactive installation art.
The main Centrum sculpture was created by Norwegian artist Nicolaus Widerberg, who also made the very first Centrum for RCCL on Nordic Empress. This piece is a contemporary interpretation of the light phenomenon called Northern Lights, made of aluminum, metal wire and glass with an integrated lighting system developed by the artist's brother, Thomas Widerberg.
