The Heart Called Orchid
The Solstice Art Collection
Jim Dine's The Heart Called Orchid is located in the Dining Corridor onboard Celebrity Solstice. The artist is renowned for his wit and creativity on the Pop and Happenings art arena and has produced an impressive body of work over the last four decades. His most urgent subjects are connected to the human body and conveyed through anatomical fragments (the heart) or items of clothing (the bathrobe).
The Heart Called Orchid is a bronze sculpture of a glowing heart that balances on its point on a ‘wooden’ pallet, which on further examination is seen also to be made of bronze. A recurring theme in Dine’s work since 1966, the heart emerges in prints, drawings and sculptures. His hearts contain layered metaphors about the body, sensuality, love, and as the artist describes them, he sees the heart as ‘the agent and the organ of my emotions’.
Dine is preoccupied with the alchemical aspect of his work, and asserts himself as a late-20th century heir to the romantic tradition.
